What a rollercoaster. Graham Benton, Big G, aged 42, the Erg Daddy, puts down a 5:48 at CRASH-B erg world championships, beats the hell out of the guys half his age, carries off the fastest time of the day, and a new world record. I can’t describe the happiness seeing how he’s applied himself the last few months. The planning, the commitment, the execution. He’s not just a big guy with a big erg, he’s a big guy built on an engine of hard work and relentless application.
I first met Big G at British erg champs in 2006. I was a scoretaker, he was Big G. (That’s me in gaping awe bottom left of the podium shot). As much of a celebrity then as he is now, he had just put the British Olympic team to the sword and found time to give us a few words of inspiration that I can’t remember. Fast forward 10 years and we’ve been through a lot, many more words I can’t remember. Two weeks ago I asked where he got his Great Britain aio for Crash-B’s ten years back and if they still did them. They didn’t. So on 10 days notice we kicked the tyres and made him one from scratch. Our exposure motives are obvious. What’s not so obvious is Big G has been involved in the creation of our race suits from the beginning when Termaxx UK was launched. What you see today bears hundreds of hours of tinkering based on his feedback on the erg and in the boat so it was an absolute unadulterated pleasure to see him win in something he’d helped craft himself.
Thanks for all your help G. Enjoy what you’ve done pal, a phenomenal achievement that won’t be repeated.
